Plywood Cut List Optimizer & Sheet Cutting Calculator
Optimize Plywood Sheet Layouts, Saw Cuts & Reusable Offcuts
Optimize plywood parts across full sheets and reusable offcuts. Use inventory first, respect grain and rotation rules, include saw kerf and edge trim, calculate purchases and cost, and generate practical guillotine cutting sheets for the workshop.
Choose units & describe the plywood
Plain dimensions use the selected unit. Explicit units such as 2440mm, 2.44m, 48in or 8ft are also accepted.
Project / job details (optional — shown on cutting sheets)
Enter stock plywood sheets & usable offcuts
Add full plywood sheets already available, rectangular offcuts in your rack, and/or standard sheet sizes that may be purchased. Set quantity to 0 for a purchase-only sheet size.
Enter required plywood parts (cut list)
Enter each finished rectangular part. Use the orientation / grain rule to allow free rotation, lock orientation, or force the part grain to align with the stock sheet grain.
Paste stock sheets from Excel / CSV
Paste plywood cut list from Excel / CSV
Advanced plywood cutting & purchasing settings
Your optimized plywood cutting plan
1. What plywood to use & what to purchase
Existing full sheets and usable offcuts are consumed first. Purchase quantities include your selected buffer.
2. Quick workshop cutting summary
Each row is one repeatable instruction: take this stock sheet → repeat this pattern → produce these parts → keep the reusable rectangles.
3. Plywood cutting cards & 2D layouts
Every layout follows recursive guillotine-style splits. Coloured rectangles are finished parts; green rectangles meet the reusable-offcut rules; red areas are small scrap; dashed lines show saw-cut positions.
4. Reusable plywood offcuts to keep
These rectangular leftovers meet your reusable width, height and optional area thresholds. They can be downloaded as an inventory list or pushed directly back into a new optimization.
5. Engineering & material breakdown
How this plan was calculated
Plywood Cut List Optimizer, Plywood Cut Calculator & Sheet Cutting Optimizer
This free plywood cut list optimizer is designed for rectangular sheet-goods jobs where finished plywood parts must be arranged across full sheets and reusable offcuts. It combines a plywood cut optimizer, plywood cut calculator, plywood layout calculator and practical sheet-cutting plan generator in one browser tool.
Unlike a simple area calculator, it considers stock-sheet dimensions, available inventory, purchasable sheet sizes, saw kerf, edge trim, face-grain direction, per-part orientation rules, reusable offcuts, purchase cost and guillotine-style cutting sequences.
How to use the plywood cutting calculator
- Enter stock plywood: add full sheets and rectangular offcuts already available, plus any standard sheet sizes that can be purchased.
- Add the plywood cut list: enter each part name, finished width, finished height, quantity and its orientation / grain rule.
- Set workshop rules: define saw kerf, edge trim, stock grain direction, reusable-offcut limits, purchase buffer and optimization preference.
- Optimize: the calculator uses existing material first, generates recursive guillotine layouts and purchases only when inventory cannot complete the schedule.
- Issue the plan: verify every part, review cutting layouts, save reusable offcuts, export CSV, download a cutting sheet or share the exact plan by link / QR / WhatsApp.
Why reusable plywood offcuts matter
A leftover rectangle is not automatically waste. If it satisfies your minimum usable width, height and optional area, this calculator keeps it separate from scrap so it can return to stock for a later job.
How the 2D Plywood Cut Optimizer Works
The calculator models each usable sheet area as a rectangle and repeatedly places required parts into free rectangles. Every placement is split with an edge-to-edge vertical-first or horizontal-first guillotine sequence, creating new rectangular free areas that can accept later parts.
It tests several practical placement strategies and candidate starting parts. Existing inventory is always evaluated before purchasable sheets. Identical completed layouts are grouped into repeatable patterns for the cutting floor.
Reusable leftover is not counted as true scrap. True scrap is reported from edge trim, saw-kerf loss and free rectangles that fall below your reusable-offcut criteria.
Assumptions & Limitations
- This version optimizes rectangular parts and rectangular stock only; curves, holes, notches and free-form CNC nesting are outside the model.
- Run incompatible plywood grades, thicknesses, face veneers or specifications as separate plans unless they are genuinely interchangeable.
- The orientation / grain selector controls whether a part may rotate freely, remain locked, or rotate only as needed to align its selected grain axis with the stock face grain.
- The browser optimizer uses a fast multi-strategy heuristic. Another arrangement may occasionally produce a lower theoretical cost, waste or number of cuts.
- Actual fabrication may require process-specific allowances for squaring, damaged edges, clamps, hold-down zones, blade entry/exit, face quality or machine limitations.
- Prices are optional and exclude freight, tax, labour, machining, edging, drilling, finishing and supplier minimum-order rules unless you incorporate those costs into your own inputs.
