Concrete Cost Calculator – Ready-Mix vs Bags

Last updated: ·Methodology·Sources

Build Your Concrete Cost Estimate

Enter your own supplier prices, delivery charges and concrete dimensions, then compare separately calculated ready-mix and premixed-bag purchasing estimates.

1. Project & measurement setup

📘 Try a supplier-price example

Sample prices below are for learning only, not current market quotes. Replace them with a real supplier quotation.

2. Project sections

i
Choosing the correct shape

Name each pour, select the shape that represents the space concrete will fill, then enter dimensions and units. Use Add concrete for new pours and Deduction / void to subtract real empty space. The diagram beside each section result helps confirm the geometry.

Examples: a circular solid slab is a short cylinder (round shape with slab thickness as height). For a hollow circular ring choose Tube / ring. Solid steps are different from supported structural stair flights. For a variable-thickness ramp, use its verified measured volume if a suitable ramp shape is unavailable.

There is no universal delivered price per cubic yard or metre. Use a current quote in your currency, with the same unit as the supplier uses. A fixed delivery/pump/other charge can be included, but it must reflect the actual quote.

3. Order allowance

Editable planning allowance for uneven grade, form variation, spillage or placement loss. It is not a structural safety factor.

A planning default only. Replace it with your supplier’s actual ordering increment.

4. Ready-mix supplier & cost settings

Supplier delivery minimums, short-load billing rules, truck sizes and rounding vary. Enter actual supplier rules. A minimum billed volume is not necessarily a minimum delivered volume.

Supplier billing, separate from delivered quantity

Supplier minimum order/delivery (above) changes actual concrete ordered. Minimum billed quantity below changes the price only. Enter your supplier’s actual terms; leave unknown fees blank, not guessed.

This model applies a flat short-load fee once to the project if its delivered order is below the entered threshold. If your supplier charges per missing yard, ask for the total fee and enter that amount. Tax rules vary; only enter a rate if it is applicable to the modeled subtotal.

5. Premix bag settings

Use the yield printed on the exact bag or product data sheet. Bag weight alone does not reliably determine mixed-concrete volume.

Compare additional product quotations

The main product above is quotation 1. Add up to three other suitable concrete premix products below. Enter each actual mixed-concrete yield, not merely its bag weight. Prices are illustrative only when using an example.

Delivery is counted once per quotation, not per bag. Verify that these products meet the same specifications and that the seller can actually supply enough bags. Quote totals do not include labor, equipment, disposal or time spent mixing.

    C. Buy cement, sand & aggregate separately

Prefer to mix materials on site? Select a nominal planning ratio or enter your approved proportions. Your estimated shopping quantities will appear below.

    Enter your material-mixing ratio

Important: nominal ratios are estimating examples, not strength guarantees. For M25/M30 and other design-mix concrete, use approved project or supplier proportions.

Important: A 1 : 2 : 3 ratio describes proportions by volume—not automatically one bag of cement plus two bags of sand and three bags of stone. The result gives cement mass / estimated 50 kg cement bags and sand and aggregate volumes. Supplier bag sizes, loose-material bulk densities and moisture differ; verify them before ordering. Mix proportions do not certify concrete strength.

Concrete cost calculator: practical measurement guide

    Read guide

Use these checks before treating the output as a purchase quantity.

Enter quotes, not average market rates

There is no universal delivered price per cubic yard or metre. Use a current quote in your currency, with the same unit as the supplier uses. A fixed delivery/pump/other charge can be included, but it must reflect the actual quote.

Minimum load is not necessarily minimum billing

The minimum-load field affects the reported supplier order quantity in this version. A supplier may deliver less but bill more; verify this difference and do not treat the tool as a full commercial quotation engine.

    Do not compare unlike jobs

Bag and ready-mix costs are separately calculated options, not two quantities that must both be bought. Labour, mixing hire, unloading, placement, taxes, admixtures and special access charges may differ by method and must be included separately before choosing.

    Assumptions & Limitations

These estimates depend on the dimensions, units, mix proportions, bag-yield and supplier information you provide. Please review the points most relevant to your purchase.

    📐 Measurements & geometry

Dimensions are assumed to describe the actual volume to fill. Slabs are treated as uniform-thickness solids. Round shapes and tube/ring sections use the indicated geometry. Variations in ground level, excavation, irregular profiles, embedded members and unmodelled voids are not automatically measured.

    ➕ Allowance & deductions

Percentage allowance is applied to the calculated net volume. It is a user-selected planning allowance, not a guaranteed waste percentage or structural safety factor. Only the deductions that you enter are subtracted. Inspect all dimensions and ensure no area is counted twice.

    🧱 Bags & supplier ordering

Bag count is rounded upward using the actual mixed yield of the selected product. Supplier order increment, minimum load, vehicle capacity, prices and extra charges vary and must be confirmed directly. A supplier minimum billed quantity can differ from the concrete actually delivered.

    🪨 Mixing your own ingredients

Nominal volumetric ratios estimate cement, sand and coarse aggregate quantities using assumed dry-volume and bulk-density factors. They do not account automatically for aggregate grading, moisture correction, air content, admixtures, mixing losses or strength verification. Water demand and structural performance require an approved mix/design basis.

    🛠️ Practical site considerations

Allow for safe formwork, compaction, reinforcement and cover, site access, truck/pump availability, labor, placing sequence, weather, curing, quality control and local regulations. These are not checked by the volume calculation.

    ✅ Before making a payment

Compare measurements with approved drawings and actual site conditions, confirm the concrete specification, ask suppliers for written product yields and quotation terms, and have a qualified professional review structural or safety-critical work.

Concrete Cost Calculator: Questions & Answers

Expand any question for a detailed practical explanation and limitations.

How do I calculate concrete price per cubic yard?

Measure the complete concrete volume, add any planned allowance, then identify the volume the supplier will actually sell. Multiply that order volume by its quoted price per cubic yard or metre. Add separately quoted fixed delivery, pumping or other charges. The price entered is your own supplier rate, not a CalcTypes market estimate. Taxes and other site costs are excluded unless included in that quote.

Worked example: For an 18 ft × 10 ft × 4 in driveway, net volume = 60 ft³ = 2.222 yd³. With 5% allowance, required = 2.333 yd³. A 0.25 yd³ supplier increment rounds that to 2.50 yd³. At an illustrative $180 per yd³ plus a $125 fixed delivery charge, the estimated ready-mix price = 2.50 × $180 + $125 = $575, excluding unentered taxes, labour and other charges.

Why is the supplier order larger than the calculated volume?

The net volume is determined by project geometry. The allowance is a separate user choice. Suppliers may sell in increments such as a quarter cubic yard or apply minimum deliveries. The calculator shows the supplier-rounded order separately so you can see the difference. You must verify these purchasing rules instead of assuming every supplier follows the same increment.

Can I compare bags with delivered ready-mix?

Yes. Enter a manufacturer-stated yield and bag price for the premixed product, and enter the quoted ready-mix price and fixed charges. The results show both estimates separately. Compare the two after checking that they are suitable products for the same pour and that you include labour, handling, mixing, placing and access costs that differ between methods.

Does the estimated cost include labour and tax?

Not automatically. The calculator prices only the quantities and rates you explicitly provide. The optional fixed-cost field can include a quoted delivery or pump amount, but this does not imply it covers reinforcing steel, formwork, base preparation, placing labour, curing, finishing, waste disposal, tax or surcharges. A full construction estimate needs those additional line items.

    What is a short-load fee?

Some ready-mix suppliers charge extra for small deliveries, under-utilized trucks, minimum billed quantities or short orders. Policies vary by supplier and location. This calculator accepts a user-entered fixed cost and a supplier minimum order volume, but it does not automatically calculate every short-load billing policy. Obtain an actual quotation and distinguish minimum billed volume from minimum delivered volume.

Which volume should I give my supplier?

Start by providing the required volume after allowance, plus the chosen concrete specification and project constraints. Discuss delivery increments, minimums, truck access and timing with the supplier; then confirm the final purchase quantity. The calculator reports net measured volume, allowance and supplier-rounded order separately, so you can explain and review the recommendation.

Can this calculator give an accurate national average cost?

No. Material and delivery prices change by region, supplier, strength class, admixtures, order size, access and date. Any single fixed price would risk misleading visitors. The tool is deliberately quote-driven, with editable currency, unit rate and fixed charges. Use fresh supplier quotations and review availability before budgeting.

How do I avoid accidentally buying concrete twice?

The three purchase sections—ready-mix, premix bags, and separate ingredients—are alternative routes to produce the intended volume. Do not add all three quantities into one shopping list. Decide which route you are actually using, verify its material specification and use the corresponding result in the supplier-ready order report.

Why can the billed ready-mix amount exceed the concrete delivered?

Some suppliers have a minimum quantity used for billing, but still deliver only the quantity ordered. For example, you may require 2.5 yd³ and your supplier bills at least 3 yd³. At $180 per yd³, the concrete material charge is $540, even though only 2.5 yd³ are delivered. This is different from a minimum physical order, which would change the quantity received and may create surplus concrete. Short-load charges may be separate as well.

The calculator treats these as different inputs. It adds a short-load fee only if you enter a threshold and the delivered volume falls below it; delivery per truck, pump, other fixed charges and an optional tax percentage are also separated. Confirm all fee definitions with the concrete plant. A comparison based on costs alone does not assess mix design, suitability, pumping access, setting time, or labor.

    Methodology & formulas

Page focus: concrete cost calculator. There is no universal delivered price per cubic yard or metre. Use a current quote in your currency, with the same unit as the supplier uses. A fixed delivery/pump/other charge can be included, but it must reflect the actual quote.

    Geometry

    • Rectangular: V = length × width × depth.
    • Round solid: V = π × (diameter ÷ 2)² × height.
    • Tube / ring: V = π × [(OD ÷ 2)² − (ID ÷ 2)²] × height.
    • Solid steps: V = width × tread × rise × n(n+1)/2, plus optional platform depth × total stair height × width.
    • Curb + gutter: curb section + gutter/flag section along the entered length.

    Ordering sequence

Added sections − deductions = net measured volume. Allowance is then added. Supplier increment/minimum is applied only afterward, so purchasing rules never change the underlying measured need.

    Bags

Whole bags = required volume ÷ manufacturer-stated mixed yield per bag, rounded up. Bag weight is used only for handling/total dry weight, not to infer yield.

    Site-mix materials

Optional material quantities use the selected parts and dry-volume factor. Cement mass uses an estimating bulk density of 1440 kg/m³. Real mix design depends on materials, grading, water, admixtures, exposure, workability and performance requirements.
