International tipping guide

Tipping in Mexico

In Mexican restaurants and bars, 10–15% is a customary starting range when service is not already included.

Important international tipping disclaimer

Use this page as a starting point, not a universal rule. This page provides general travel-etiquette and calculation guidance, not legal, tax, employment, or consumer advice. Practices vary by region, resort, all-inclusive property, restaurant and service type. A β€œservicio” line may be compulsory, suggested, or handled differently by the business. Check whether gratuities are included in a package, ask how a charge is distributed, and confirm the final total before signing a card receipt.

For flat-amount services, this can remain as context while the quantity drives the result.

Enter the included percentage only when it clearly counts toward your intended gratuity.

How tipping works in Mexico

Restaurant and bar tipping is customary, commonly in the 10–15% range. Small cash amounts are also used for porters, drivers and housekeeping.

Receipt language to recognize

propina servicio cargo por servicio

Terminology alone does not prove that a charge reaches a particular worker. Ask the venue when distribution matters.

Propina in practice: bills, cash and everyday tips

In Mexico the propina is voluntary. Mexico’s consumer protection agency, PROFECO, has repeatedly reminded businesses that a tip cannot be charged without the customer’s consent. Menu prices already include 16% IVA, so 10–15% is calculated on the total you see.

Check for β€œpropina incluida” or β€œservicio”

Tourist-area restaurants in CancΓΊn, Los Cabos or Puerto Vallarta sometimes add 10–15% automatically, occasionally in small print. If it is there, you do not need to tip again. If it was added without being disclosed, you can ask for it to be removed.

Small tips that are part of daily life

  • Grocery baggers (cerillos): often older volunteers who work for tips β€” MXN 5–10.
  • Gas station attendants: MXN 10–20, a little more if they clean the windscreen or check tyres.
  • Street parking helpers (viene-viene): MXN 10–20 when you leave.
  • Taxis: fares are usually agreed or zoned and not tipped; app rides can be tipped 10%.

Worked example

Dinner for two: MXN 1,200 (IVA included). A 15% propina is MXN 180, so MXN 1,380 in total. Paying the tip in pesos cash makes sure it reaches your server; card tips are sometimes held back or taxed by the venue.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I tip in Mexico?

Use the calculator as a starting point, then check the receipt, service type, local custom and venue policy.

Should I tip when a service charge is included?

Not automatically. Identify whether the charge replaces gratuity, is compulsory, or is simply another fee before adding more.

Should I calculate the tip before or after tax?

Use the base that matches local practice and your intention. The calculator keeps the choice transparent.

Do card-terminal tip prompts reflect local custom?

Not necessarily. A payment interface can show preset percentages even where tipping is optional or not expected.

Can the same country have different tipping rules?

Yes. City, region, resort, venue category, service type and booking terms can all change the practical answer.

Can I tip in US dollars in Mexico?

It is accepted in resort areas, but pesos are better: workers lose money exchanging small dollar amounts, and coins cannot be exchanged at all.

Is 10% enough in Mexico?

Yes for casual restaurants. In upscale or tourist-zone restaurants 15% is more usual.

Methodology and authoritative references

CalcTypes separates arithmetic from etiquette. The tool applies a transparent percentage or flat amount, while the editorial guidance identifies whether tipping is expected, optional, included or generally unnecessary. Sources are reviewed for destination relevance and receipt terminology.

Check the current bill, booking terms, provider policy and local official guidance before paying.
