Tip Percentage Calculator

Find an implied tip rate, calculate a tip amount, or recover an original bill from a final total using three transparent modes.

Find the tip percentage

Tip percentage formulas

Find the rate

Tip % = Tip amount ÷ Bill × 100

Use this to check the real percentage on a receipt or payment screen.

Find the tip

Tip = Bill × Tip % ÷ 100

Use this when you know the percentage you want to leave.

Recover the bill

Bill = Final total ÷ (1 + Tip %)

This works when the final total contains only the bill and tip.

Remove tax, service charges and other fees before using the “recover the bill” mode unless they are already part of the known base.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate the tip percentage from a receipt?

Divide the voluntary tip amount by the bill amount used as the tip base, then multiply by 100.

Can I find the original bill from a final total?

Yes, when you know the tip percentage and the total contains only the bill and tip. Remove tax and mandatory fees first when they are separate.

Why is the displayed percentage different from the payment terminal?

The terminal may use a post-tax amount or include fees in its base. Compare the dollar suggestion with both possible bases.

Is an automatic gratuity included in the tip amount?

For arithmetic you can include it, but a compulsory charge is not the same as a voluntary tip under U.S. federal guidance.

Can the percentage be over 100%?

Mathematically yes, although ordinary tipping situations usually use much smaller percentages.

Methodology and sources

The formulas are standard percentage relationships. When a receipt includes a compulsory service charge, treat it separately from a voluntary tip unless the page is being used only for arithmetic.

Use these calculations as a transparent check. Receipt rules, business policies and local customs can change the practical answer.
