Fitrana Inputs

How this works: Choose a staple food, enter its current local price per kg, choose the weight standard per person, then enter the number of people. The calculator gives the estimated cash equivalent of Zakat al-Fitr.
Zakat al-Fitr is traditionally given as 1 Saa’ of a staple food per person. Select the commodity you wish to use as the basis for your calculation.
Enter the current local market price per kg for the commodity you selected. You can also use the cash rate announced by your local mosque if they publish one.
1 Saa’ is approximately 2.5 to 3 kg depending on the commodity and scholarly opinion. Choose the standard your community follows, or enter a custom weight.
Include yourself and all dependents (spouse, children, elderly parents, etc.) on whose behalf you are paying Zakat al-Fitr.
⏰ Reminder: Zakat al-Fitr must be paid before the Eid al-Fitr prayer. If paid after, it is treated as general charity (sadaqah), not obligatory Fitr.

      What Is Zakat al-Fitr?

Zakat al-Fitr (also called Fitrana or Sadaqat al-Fitr) is an obligatory charity given at the end of Ramadan, before the Eid al-Fitr prayer. It is required on behalf of every Muslim in the household, regardless of age or gender. It is different from annual Zakat on wealth, which you can estimate with our comprehensive Zakat Calculator.

The head of household typically pays on behalf of all dependents, including spouse, children, elderly parents, and anyone they are financially responsible for.

      How Much Is 1 Saa’?

The Prophetic standard for Zakat al-Fitr is 1 Saa’ of staple food per person. A Saa’ is an ancient volumetric measure. In modern weight equivalents, scholars generally estimate it as:

      • 2.5 kg — common approximation used by many scholars and organizations
      • 3.0 kg — more cautious estimate, preferred by some scholars

The exact weight may vary slightly depending on the commodity’s density. This calculator lets you choose 2.5 kg, 3.0 kg, or enter a custom weight.

Timing: When Must Zakat al-Fitr Be Paid?

Zakat al-Fitr must be paid before the Eid al-Fitr prayer. Most scholars recommend paying it a day or two before Eid so that recipients can benefit from it on Eid day.

If paid after the Eid prayer, it is considered general charity (sadaqah) rather than the obligatory Fitr payment.

Cash vs Food: Can Zakat al-Fitr Be Given in Cash?

Scholars differ on whether Zakat al-Fitr can be given as cash instead of food:

      • Hanafi position: Giving the cash equivalent is permissible and often more practical.
      • Other schools: Some scholars prefer or require giving the actual food commodity.

This calculator estimates the cash equivalent based on the commodity price you enter. Follow the guidance of a scholar you trust.

      Country-Specific Notes

The Islamic obligation of Zakat al-Fitr does not change by country. However:

      • India & Pakistan: Local mosques typically announce recommended Fitr rates each Ramadan. Check with your community.
      • UK, Canada, USA: Islamic organizations and mosques publish annual Fitr guidelines. You may also use local grocery prices to calculate your own rate.

Similarly, our faraid calculator provides estimates based on universal rules, but local laws affect implementation.
